Bio
Dr. Amo Raju OBE is a highly respected charity consultant, public speaker and advocate for inclusion with over 30 years of leadership in the UK’s not-for-profit sector. As former CEO of Disability Direct, for more than three decades he spearheaded initiatives that raised over £35 million and launched more than 75 services, all aimed at improving the lives of disabled people and promoting independent living.
His work has been instrumental in supporting under-represented communities across the UK, as well as in delivering international social impact projects, including wheelchair distribution initiatives in India. Dr. Raju has also supported over ten social enterprises, offering expert guidance in governance, sustainability and innovation.
He is widely sought after for his strategic insight into the charity sector, particularly in the areas of disability, leadership, and social enterprise. As a mentor, he helps develop emerging leaders committed to driving systemic change and inclusive practice.
A compelling keynote speaker, Dr. Raju has captivated audiences at high-profile events such as the Charity Times Awards, the NHS Annual Conference, and TEDx. His media presence includes appearances on BBC, ITV, GB News, and TalkTV, where he provides commentary on disability rights, mental health and equality.
Dr. Raju is also the host of a thought-provoking podcast that tackles difficult subjects such as grief, mental health and societal taboos around disability. His personal story, captured in his memoir “Walk Like A Man: From Limited to Limitless,” chronicles his journey of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
Honoured with an OBE for services to disabled people and mental health, and recipient of the National Diversity Awards’ Lifetime Achiever Award, Dr. Raju is a widely recognised figure in the field of social justice.
Currently serving as a Deputy to the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, he continues to inspire individuals and organisations alike, using his voice and experience to drive inclusion, influence policy for a road to a fairer society.
